Fellowship Program Director: Amisha Barochia, MBBS, MHS, ATSF
Overview
The Critical Care Medicine Department offers a three to four year ACGME-accredited fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine. Fellows must have completed a residency in internal medicine. The program provides comprehensive clinical training in the management of critical illness, and pulmonary diseases. Fellows develop critical thinking skills applicable to any patient with single or multisystem organ failure, in addition to developing leadership skills in basic or translational research through training and mentoring. The NIH Clinical Center is a unique environment bridging the gap between basic science and direct patient care. This environment provides an unequalled opportunity for collaboration with some of the most highly regarded physicians and researchers in the world.
Program Structure
The fellowship training involves 18 months of clinical training, with part of the time spent at the NIH Clinical Center, and the rest at other area teaching hospitals, including University of Maryland Medical Center and Medstar Washington Hospital Center. Pulmonary and critical care physicians in this training program have primary patient responsibility, while working closely with the referring physicians and the multiple consultative services necessary to provide comprehensive care to our patients.
The second half of fellowship involves participation in active research programs in basic science laboratories with genomics/proteomics facilities, clinical trials, or medical education. Fellows are encouraged to select from among these resources to develop research studies relevant to pulmonary and critical care medicine. Full-time research activities commence at the end of clinical training and may be extended for an additional one to two years based on research productivity.
