Overview

The Pediatric Hematology & Oncology Fellowship is a joint fellowship between the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the National Cancer Institute, two of the most distinguished hematology-oncology centers in the world. This partnership provides exceptional training opportunities to six new fellows per year with exposure to cutting-edge translational research and clinical medicine. The program's training mission is to train diversly talented subspecialist academicians, clinicians, and clinician-researchers who will become leaders in the field of pediatric hematology-oncology. Trainees gain experience under world-renowned experts committed to mentorship in several subspecialty fields including but not limited to oncology and survivorship care, immunotherapy, cellular therapy, radiation oncology, benign hematology, hematopoietic stem cell transplant, and palliative care. Fellows each year are selected via the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP).

Program Structure

The first year of the fellowship is largely clinical with inpatient and outpatient exposure at JHU and the NIH.

  • JHU Hematology Inpatient Service
  • JHU Hematology Outpatient Service
  • JHU Hematology Bone Marrow Transplant
  • JHU Oncology Service
  • NIH Oncology (Inpatient, Outpatient, Rare Diseases, and HSCT)
  • Continuity Clinic (weekly during selected rotations)

The second and third years are focused research years allowing for training in laboratory and/or clinical research. Among the many advantages of the combined JHU/NCI training program is the wide range of research opportunities available to each fellow. Laboratory and clinical research at both institutions are unparalleled and the combined program allows the fellow to choose among a vast number of research options. To ensure maximum productivity, clinical responsibilities are limited and focused on continuity of care for patients encountered by the fellow during the first year of training, although advanced clinical electives that align with fellows' career goals are available. The remainder of this protected time is spent pursuing a research initiative tailored to the specific interests of the fellow. Decisions regarding the appropriate locale for research training are made in concert with faculty advisors and fellowship directors with dedicated exploration time available in the first year. Many fellows focus on basic science research, either in the laboratories of faculty members in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at either institution or in other appropriate laboratory settings. Fellows are free to choose among the many laboratories at JHU and throughout the intramural NIH community.

Fellows have the option to stay on for a fourth year of advanced training, which allows for additional dedicated research time as well an option of focused clinical training in formal 4th year of training programs in benign hematology, neuro-oncology, sarcoma, bone marrow, transplant, cellular therapy, or Pediatric palliative care.

Selected fellows who have chosen to focus on clinical research may apply to the clinical research program offered via Duke University as a joint program with the NIH leading to a Master's Degree in Clinical Research. Alternatively, fellows may enroll at the JHU Bloomberg School of Public Health, where formal training and a clinical research experience is provided in the expectation of fellows obtaining a PhD in Clinical Investigation.

Application Procedure

Applicants who wish to apply to the combined fellowships will need to apply through ERAS.
