About the Volunteer Services Program
Volunteer Services Program Mission Statement
The Volunteer Services Program promotes the mission of the Clinical Center by developing and maintaining an efficient corps of volunteers to assist and support Clinical Center staff in delivering quality care that exceeds the expectations of patients, families, and visitors.
Volunteer Services Program Vision
The Volunteer Services Program supports the Clinical Center's vision of serving as the nation's premier research hospital by providing innovative and exemplary volunteer services dedicated to improving the quality of life for Clinical Center patients and providing support for families and visitors.
Background
For the NIH and the Clinical Center, volunteerism has been a valuable source of workforce assistance and provides members of the community a way to give their time, energy, and talents to the hospital. Through their work, volunteers deliver an extra dimension of staff support to provide quality care that exceeds the expectations of patients, families, and visitors who are served. The VSP was initiated by the Montgomery County Chapter of the American Red Cross in 1953 to supplement NIH hospital staff in the delivery of services and to foster relationships with the outlying community. Today the VSP is managed under the auspices of the Clinical Center Office of Hospitality and Volunteer Services.
