The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism conducts a coordinated program of clinical research concerning the causes, consequences, and treatment of alcohol use disorders. Depending on the needs and interests of each student, there are opportunities to participate in clinical research studies of patients, and normal volunteers on an inpatient unit, an outpatient clinic or a laboratory.

Specific areas of research interest include the clinical pharmacology and biochemistry of alcohol, pharmacotherapy to reduce relapse, possible novel medications, clinical characterization and treatment of both acute and chronic alcohol withdrawal syndromes, pharmacogenetics of alcohol, and investigation of the neuropsychiatric consequences of alcohol use using neuropsychological, electrophysiological, and brain imaging methodologies. Each student will join a senior investigator who will serve as the student's preceptor and who will provide supervision in clinical care and research activities.
