THIS ELECTIVE IS NOT ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS AT THIS TIME.

Elective Description

The clinical research elective rotation in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility offers residents the unique experience provided by the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center, a state-of-the-art clinical research hospital with 200 inpatient beds, surgical day hospital and outpatient clinic facilities to support the clinical care required for patients enrolled in human subject investigation protocols. At the Clinical Center, the resident will be exposed to and learn how to manage a large cadre of complex patients with a spectrum of reproductive, genetic and endocrine pathology in collaboration with NIH teaching faculty In Adult Endocrinology, Pediatric Endocrinology, and Medical Genetics. Participating residents will attend weekly clinical conferences, preoperative and academic didactic conferences, as well as specialty program conferences with presentations and discussions covering reproductive problems and state-of-the art research relating to endocrinology and reproduction.

The elective is offered in conjunction with the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) REI fellowship training program is conducted with faculty resources from the National Institutes of Health, the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS), Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC), and the Shady Grove Fertility Center. This fellowship program has the mission to train reproductive endocrinology and infertility subspecialists who will become physician-scientists, serve as faculty in military, government, and academic institutions and provide evidence-based cutting edge treatments to couples with infertility.

Under the mentorship of senior program members, the resident will be assigned to a research project, chapter, or manuscript review during the rotation. Priority will be given to reading, research, and writing. It is generally expected that a manuscript will be submitted before the end of the rotation. Residents on this rotation have access to the information resources of the NIH and one of the finest medical libraries in the United States.

Elective Objectives

  • The resident will master a topic in the field of Reproductive Endocrinology.
  • The resident will be able to critically review a manuscript and extract salient points.
  • The resident will be able to synthesize material and structure a discussion of the material in a manner consistent with publication in a peer-reviewed medical journal.
  • The resident will be able to prepare a scholarly work, appropriately referenced.
  • The resident will be able to describe the appropriate use of basic statistical tests and distinguish categorical data from parametric data. While statistical expertise is not possible to achieve during a short-term rotation (usually 4 weeks), it is expected that the resident will advance their understanding of statistical concepts entailed in outcomes research and review of the literature.

Selection of Applicants

Applicants will be selected based on review of the resident's credentials and cover letter, which should outline their rationale and goals for the rotation. Usually only two residents will be allowed per session. Availability may be limited due to program constraints.
