Sickle Cell Patients Needed for Kidney Function Study
Kidney complications can be significant problem in patients with sickle cell. Doctors at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) seek patients with sickle cell disease to evaluate the best noninvasive predictor of renal function. The study will measure kidney function with an iothalamate test, the "gold standard" measure of kidney function, and see how it relates to the following:
✓ Cystatin-C (a protein that is produced by the cells in your body)
✓ Urinary protein content
✓ Kidney MRI (to assess renal anatomy as well as blood flow and iron accumulation)
Who Can Particpate?
- Patients 18 and older with sickle cell anemia (including HbSS, HbS-β0 thalassemia)
Study Design
- All volunteers will undergo screening labs to ensure they meet eligibility criteria
- Study volunteers will be compensated for their participation
The NIH Clinical Center is America's Research Hospital and is located in Bethesda, Maryland, on the Metro Red line (Medical Center stop).
