Trichuriasis is an infection caused by the parasite Trichuris trichiura (commonly known as whipworm). There is evidence that this infection can have therapeutic benefits in Inflammatory Bowel Disease and other inflammatory conditions.
Drs. Loke, Droghini and Nutman are leading this collaboration between the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and George Washington University to determine the optimal number of whipworm eggs that healthy adults can ingest to induce an intestinal infection safely. This study is key to understanding the immune response to infection to develop new treatment approaches for diseases of gastrointestinal inflammation, underscoring their commitment to improving patient outcomes.
