Dr. James Gilman, CEO of the NIH Clinical Center and a retired Army major general, speaks as the keynote speaker the 2017 NIH Veterans Day Celebration Nov. 9 at the NIH Clinical Center
Dr. James Gilman, CEO of the NIH Clinical Center and a retired Army major general, was the keynote speaker at the 2017 NIH Veterans Day Celebration Nov. 9 in the Masur Auditorium in the NIH Clinical Center. During his speech, Gilman thanked the nearly 1,000 military veterans who work at NIH, including 129 at the Clinical Center, and shared anecdotes from his service. One of those anecdotes featured World War II veteran, Claude Lovett, whom Gilman knew for 25 years. Gilman said Lovett was his hero but not for Lovett's war service. In all the time Gilman knew the WWII vet, he said Lovett never had a sense of entitlement because of his war service. Gilman told today's veterans that they too should be proud of their military service but that they should not feel entitled because of that service.
