Dr. Thomas Burklow is the Director of the Office of Clinical Research Training and Medical Education, where he oversees the portfolio of Clinical Center education and training programs, including continuing medical education, graduate medical education, undergraduate medical research training, IRTA training, and healthcare simulation program, and Acting Chief of Office of Patient Safety and Quality Care.

Dr. Burklow received his AB and MD from Washington University in St. Louis where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He completed his residency in pediatrics at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and his cardiology fellowship at Children’s National Medical Center, Washington DC.
Dr. Burklow joined the NIH in 2017 following a 30-year career in Army Medicine, during which he served for 10 years as Chief of Pediatrics at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and as Director of Healthcare Operations
Upon arriving at the NIH Clinical Center, Dr. Burklow served as Director of the Medical Research Scholars Program. He was appointed Acting Director of OCRTME in 2021 and became Director in 2023. In this role, he oversees the portfolio of education and training programs, including continuing medical education, graduate medical education, undergraduate medical research training, IRTA training, and healthcare simulation program.
Additionally, he is currently serving as the Acting Chief of Office of Patient Safety and Quality Care.
Dr. Burklow holds the title of Senior Research Physician and has a joint appointment in the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute as Chief of the Pediatric Cardiology Section of the NHLBI Cardiology Consult Service. He is board-certified in general pediatrics and pediatric cardiology.
