Biosketch

Michaele Smith came to NIH as a student in the 1983 to complete curriculum requirements for Physical Therapy program at Howard University.  She accepted a commission as an officer in the U.S. Public Health Service and returned to NIH as an employee in 1986.   She began as a staff therapist and quickly progressed to senior staff therapist and the Education Coordinator of the Physical Therapy section. Early in her career she organized numerous educational courses; health fairs; developed the sections competency based program and post graduate clinical research program for academicians and clinical therapists. Since the revision of the section’s education program in 2002, the program has generated numerous abstracts, posters and manuscripts mostly through the NIH summer intern program (SIP) and independent physical therapy academic requests for student placement.  

While the primary emphasis is on clinical patient care, she and the staff are currently involved in advancing clinical research through institute collaboration using innovative assessment & treatment outcome measurements to enhance patient care, clinical research and education. 

Early NIH interests were in the area of pediatric oncology, HIV infection, Juvenile Dermatomyositis (JDM), and stroke rehabilitation.  Parallel with these interests was the development of the RMD pediatric team whose work served the CC but specifically collaborative research with the Pediatric Oncology Branch, Rainbow Team under the leadership of Dr. Phil Pizzo. This work was instrumental in obtaining pharmaceutical approval for AZT in children with HIV infection.    Current interests involve children with genetic disorders (Smith Magenis Syndrome), Neonatal Onset Multi-systems Inflammatory Disorder (NOMID) syndrome and Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1).

CAPT Smith serves as a board member for the credentialing of new staff therapists in the Rehabilitation Medicine Department, NIH.  She is an active member of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), Commissioned Officers Association (COA) and Therapist Professional Advisory Committee (TPAC).  She has completed the Bobath Neuro-Developmental (NDT) certification in the treatment of children. In addition, she serves as Chair of the HIV/AIDS SIG, (APTA) and past chair of the Cultural Competence Committee, (APTA) and is a credentialed clinical education instructor through the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA).  As Captain in the U.S. Public Health Service, she is the past Category Discipline Specific Liaison and Mentoring Chairperson of the Therapist Professional Advisory Committee (TPAC).   
 
She has lectured and written articles on the topic of pediatric HIV infection, Juvenile Dermatomyositis and genetics at local, national and international conferences. Her passions are in the area of mentoring, volunteers, therapists and community service.
