Do You Drink More Than 20 Drinks Per Week?

The National Institutes on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) is recruiting heavy drinkers for a study to evaluate the safety of an investigational drug to treat signs and symptoms of alcohol associated liver damage. If you drink more than 20 alcoholic beverages per week, you may have this type of liver damage. Research participation includes 7 outpatient visits over 8 weeks. Study visits consist of blood draws, clinical assessments, and administration of the drug (or placebo) and last approximately 2 hours. The first and last study visit include optional live MRI, FibroScan, and doppler/ultrasound assessments and last about 4-5 hours.

You are able to participate if:

  • You are between the ages of 21 and 65 years
  • You drink more than 20 alcoholic drinks per week
  • You can come to the NIH clinical center for weekly outpatient visits for 2 months

You are not able to participate if:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You are seeking treatment for alcohol related or other medical condition(s)
  • You are participating in another study involving a drug treatment or blood draws
