Two NIH employees hit milestone 50 years of service at the NIH

During the two most recent Town Hall meetings (April 10 and July 10), Dr. James Gilman provided a variety of hospital updates and distributed length-of-service awards to staff who hit five-year incremental milestones between 5 to 50 years of federal service. The July Town Hall marks Gilmans one-year-anniversary for Length of Service recognition as a component of the quarterly town hall meetings.

In July, Gilman honored Barbara Taylor for more the 50 years of service to NIH. Taylor works in the Clinical Center Office of Purchasing and Contracts. Taylor joins recent recipient, Alba Murphy, as one of the select few to reach that milestone.

Murphy received the 50-year-length-of-service award in April. Murphy, an IT Coordinator in the NIH Clinical Center Department of Laboratory Medicine, began her career in 1968. She started as a laboratory technician in the microbiology section of the Clinical Pathology Department (now called the Department of Laboratory Medicine).

"This is the only department where I have worked," Murphy said. "Computers arrived in 1986. I somehow got the title of computer liaison in the early 90's. I think it was because I complained that Department of Laboratory Medicine had so many computers but no one knew how to fix them." Now, Murphy and others can quickly use online ticket support for IT problems and work alongside the Department of Clinical Research Informatics to get them resolved.

"The most rewarding part [of my job] is working in a place that is dedicated to helping those who have nowhere else to go in their search for a cure," she said.
