The NIAAA experimental medicine unit offers unique capacity for early human evaluation of experimental therapeutics that target addictive disorders and related conditions, with the main current focus being on alcohol addiction. Surrogate markers based on behavioral, neuroendocrine and brain imaging responses are evaluated under closely controlled and monitored inpatient conditions, to inform go/no go decisions for continued clinical development, and inform study design of subsequent efficacy studies.
