Elective Rotations for Residents and Clinical Fellows: Resident Electives

Hematopathology

The Hematopathology Section of the Laboratory of Pathology, National Cancer Institute (NCI), offers a fully Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited fellowship in hematopathology, which provides broad exposure to the diagnostic and investigative aspects of neoplastic hematopathology. Residents enrolled in ACGME-approved residency programs in anatomic and clinical pathology are eligible for elective rotations in hematopathology. Residents will be assigned to the diagnostic hematopathology service, partnering with a hematopathology Fellow on service. Rotating Residents receive a complement of cases to review and sign out with the senior staff pathologist.

Residents are responsible for all aspects of the diagnostic workup, including the ordering and review of special procedures and also the dictation of the final pathology report. Residents attend all hematopathology conferences and journal clubs, including a weekly molecular diagnostic review conference. In addition to routine diagnostic cases, a large number of study sets are available for review. This elective rotation introduces Residents to the subtleties of hematopathology diagnosis and the differential diagnosis of neoplastic and reactive lymphoid lesions in tissues and bone marrow.

Apply online using the Resident Elective Program application form. This is a one-month rotation. Residents are encouraged to apply early during the preceding academic year. A limited number of positions are usually available.
