On October 20-21, 2011, the Ninth Annual Clinical Investigator Student Trainee (CIST) Forum will convene medical, dental, and veterinary students participating in clinical and translational research fellowships ("year-long enrichment" programs at academic medical centers and at the NIH) for a two-day meeting at the NIH in Bethesda, Maryland with their peers, program leaders, and established clinical and translational researchers from around the country.
The forum program consists of lectures, panels, and break-out sessions which will provide the opportunity for participants to learn more about contemporary biomedical research; academic careers in basic, clinical and translational research; and practical tips for successful academic and research careers, while providing an opportunity for plenty of peer-to-peer interaction. This year's forum will include a welcoming address from the NIH director, current and future research updates from NIH institute and center directors; practical tips and skills needed for careers in the biomedical research spectrum; and extended professional networking opportunities. In addition there will be tours of the NIH Clinical Research Center; an overview and understanding of NIH loan repayment programs, NIH grants and private funding. There will also be break-out sessions on global and public health, team science, the important differences in research settings, and helpful hints for residency selection and success during residency training.
Invited student attendees include Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI)-NIH Research Scholars (Cloister) and HHMI Medical Fellows (non-Cloister), Doris Duke Charitable Foundation (DDCF) Clinical Research Fellows, National Center for Research Resources (NCRR)/Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA)-sponsored students in year-long research programs, NIH Clinical Research Training Program (CRTP) Fellows, Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research Foundation Fellows, Fellows in the Applied Epidemiology Fellowship at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars, and the NIH M.D./Ph.D. Partnership Training Program Fellows.
