Depression and Diabetes in Young Girls

Parents of Teens
NIH Study available for girls who feel sad and have a family member with diabetes

The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, is conducting a study to see if improving depressive symptoms decreases girls’ risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Participation involves two screening visits, random assignment to a six-week group program, and three follow-up visits within a year. Compensation may be provided. Parents must give permission for minors to participate.

Your teen may be eligible if she:

  • is between 12 and 17 years of age
  • is overweight
  • is in good health
  • has a family member with diabetes

Your teen may not be eligible if she:

  • has major depression or another psychiatric disorder
  • is currently taking weight loss medication
  • is pregnant
