Autism Spectrum Disorders Study

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) Study at the National Institutes of Health
The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development at the National Institutes of Health is accepting children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) for a clinical research study of dietary cholesterol supplementation in children with ASD who have abnormally low cholesterol.

Your child may qualify if he/she:

  • Is 4 to 11 years of age.
  • Has a diagnosis of Autistic Disorder, Asperger Disorder, Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS).

Your child may not qualify if he/she:

  • Has had a seizure in the last 3 months.
  • Has a diagnosis of Rett Disorder, schizophrenia, Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome, or Fragile X syndrome.

What is involved
This outpatient study may include diagnostic evaluation, psychological testing, and supplementation of dietary cholesterol for those who are eligible.

  • Study is conducted at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, MD
  • There is no charge for study-related tests or treatments.
  • Compensation is provided.
  • Parents must give permission for minors to participate.
