CROWN: From the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, this is CLINICAL CENTER RADIO.
The NIH Clinical Center’s Department of Bioethics has appointed Dr. Christine Grady as chief. She’ll lead the Bioethics department, which remains a critical part of research at the Clinical Center and NIH-supported research around the world. The bioethics team advises researchers on a variety of ethical issues, including genetic research and the use of placebos. Dr. Grady has served as deputy director of the department since 1996 and acting chief since September 2011. Her research areas include key patient-related ethical issues, such as subject recruitment, vulnerability, informed consent, and international research ethics.
GRADY: Research has a lot of wonderful aspects to it and many people do benefit from being in research. But the goal of research is to generate knowledge and so because of that difference it is important for people to understand that before they decide if they want to do it or not.
CROWN: Dr. Grady has a bachelor's degree in nursing and biology from Georgetown University, a master's degree in community health nursing from Boston College, and a doctoral degree in philosophy and bioethics from Georgetown University. She is currently a member of President Obama's Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues and is a senior research fellow at the Kennedy Institute of Ethics. From America's Clinical Research Hospital, this has been CLINICAL CENTER RADIO. In Bethesda, Maryland, I'm Ellen Crown, at the National Institutes of Health, an agency of the United States Department of Health and Human Services.
