Overview
Genetics and genomics are increasingly being used as tools for diagnosis, management and treatment of a range of common conditions, necessitating the development of competence in the field of genomics/genetics by healthcare practitioners. This one day course will provide experienced oncology nurses with the foundation for genetics knowledge and application to the oncology clinical setting through interactive learning approaches. Lecture topics include basic genetics and genomics, importance of genetics/genomics in cancer nursing, genetic risk assessment and screening, pharmacogenetic and pharmacogenomic testing, ethical, legal, and social issues, research activities in genetics, and how to incorporate genetics competencies into nursing practice.

Target Audience
The Advanced Oncology Education Series is for nurses with at least two years of oncology experience.
Continuing Nursing Education
An application has been made for 5.75 contact hours to the ONS Approver Unit. ONS is an accredited approver of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
