The NIH is the largest consumer of electricity in Montgomery County, paying over $4 million for electricity every month. NIH uses enough energy to power 53,000 households each year and across all its campuses and buildings. As the largest building on campus, the Clinical Center is committed to reducing this bill and conserving electricity whenever possible.
Here are some ways you can help support this effort:
- Lights out when you’re out.
If you are leaving a room for more then five minutes, shut off the lights to save energy. Shutting the lights off when you leave a small office can save the Clinical Center and the NIH approximately 3 cents an hour.
- Unplug unused equipment.
Things like phone chargers, radios, and coffee makers continue to drain energy when left plugged in even when they aren’t in use. Unplug unused equipment whenever you can.
- Put your computer to sleep.
Screen savers don’t save energy. Turn off your computer and monitor when you leave your desk at night or over the weekend.
