NIH Sickle Cell Cord Blood Research Program

What is necessary to do to participate?

To participate, first the mother must receive information about the program. This usually involves a face-to-face meeting in which all aspects of the program are explained. Once the potential donor’s questions are answered, she will be asked to read the "Informed Consent" document and sign it. This document spells out what will be expected from the maternal donor and each step of our research.

The process includes:
Obtaining a medical and family history.

Permission for us to review the mother’s and the baby’s hospital medical chart.

Permission for us to collect and test the infant's cord blood and to be notified of any abnormal results.

Giving accurate contact information Permission for us to contact them in the future to obtain updates on the baby's health.
