Dr. Yao earned his undergraduate and medical degrees through the Medical Education Program at Brown University in 1981 and 1985. After serving a medical internship at the Brown-affiliated Miriam Hospital in 1985-1986, he completed radiology residency training at the Albany Medical Center Hospital in 1990, and a fellowship in musculoskeletal imaging at UCLA in 1991.

Dr. Yao was a member of the radiology faculty at UCLA from 1991-1998, where he served as the Director of Musculoskeletal MRI.  He served as Director of MRI and Associate Professor of Radiology at Georgetown University from 1999-2000.  In 2001 Dr. Yao joined MedTel International Corporation, where he served as a medical officer and director of technology integration until 2002. Dr. Yao joined the NIH in 2002 as a musculoskeletal imaging specialist, and served as the director of the MR section in radiology until 2006. He currently operates a private, sub-specialized diagnostic imaging service.

Dr. Yao is interested in the optimization of MRI techniques for clinical problem solving in orthopedics, and in the use of imaging as a measure of clinical outcome. He collaborates with research groups at NIH that study inflammatory myopathy, graft-versus-host disease, and ankylosing spondylitis.
