Dr. James Reynolds, a native of Madison, Wisconsin, earned his bachelor's and medical degrees from the University of Wisconsin. He trained in internal medicine at the Mayo Clinic and in endocrinology both at Mayo and the Ohio State University. He received nuclear medicine training at the University of Washington, Seattle. He is board certified in all three specialties and is a Certified Clinical Densitometrist (ISCD).

While teaching and practicing endocrinology at Ohio State University, Dr. Reynolds was head of the Department of Medicine clinical endocrinology laboratory. He came to the National Institutes of Health in 1983 as a staff physician and head of the in-vitro laboratory supporting diagnostic and therapeutic studies with radiolabeled monoclonal antibodies. From 1991 to 1999 he was Chief of the Clinical Studies Section of the Nuclear Medicine Department where he currently heads the Densitometry Section.

Dr. Reynolds’ more recent research has focused on diagnostic imaging and therapy of endocrine tumors including thyroid cancer, gastrinoma and pheochromocytoma with a special interest in radiation dosimetry. The densitometry section supports intramural NIH projects in bone densitometry and body composition. Dr. Reynolds currently is a co-investigator of over 40 clinical protocols.

Dr. Reynolds was a member of the NIH Radiation Safety Committee for 11 years and co-chairman from 1997 to 2002. Since 2003 he has been a member of a NICHD data safety and monitoring board for a national study of bone densitometry in children.
