Biosketch

Andrew Dwyer received a BS and MS in Mathematics in 1968-9 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and an MD from Creighton in 1973. Since completion of a radiology residency at the Hospital of Saint Raphael in New Haven in 1977, he has been a member of the staff of the Radiology Department at the NIH. Over the years he has held several administrative positions within the department including Acting Chief, Deputy Chief, and Head of MRI.

His tenure at NIH has spanned the development of MRI. Many of his publications in collaboration with NIH colleagues helped define the clinical applications of MRI and the diagnostic implications of MRI features. He has been Deputy Editor of RADIOLOGY and Assistant Editor of JCAT.

Throughout his career, he has had a central interest in the use of mathematics and statistics in diagnostic radiology and has served as a statistical and editorial resource for the department.

For the past several years, his main research focus has been the use of the principles of formal logic, probability theory, and possibility theory to elucidate the reasoning used in the interpretation of diagnostic images and to express the levels of diagnostic certainty.
