  • National recognition of NIH Clinical Center as having outstanding environment for patient-oriented research as measured by...
    • increased enrollment in NIH clinical research training programs
    • citation of "centers of excellence" and "best practices" nationally
    • consistent full accreditation (with no Type 1 recommendations) by
      Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations
    • provision of a unique mixture of services in support of protocols including cutting edge procedures (e.g., cell sorting, biomechanics)
    • leadership roles in setting standards for support services in clinical research (e.g., bioethics, comprehensive education for patients and families, protocol mapping)
  • Ten percent growth in majority of Clinical Center program characteristics
    (admissions, new patients, inpatient days, outpatient visits, new protocols, and new principal investigators).
  • Institute confidence in Clinical Center's ability to operate efficiently based on...
    • meeting or exceeding target dates for bringing new services on line (e.g., organ transplant, bone marrow transplant, acute stroke, assimilation of NIMH St. Elizabeth's patients)
    • provision of accurate and timely activity-based cost and resource data
    • continuous development of key initiatives to promote patient care and clinical research services
    • development of internal and external productivity benchmarks that demonstrate optimal performance
    • recruitment and retention of the highest quality clinicians and managers to collaborate with Institutes in science and management

What broad goals should the Clinical Center pursue to support its organizational mission and vision?

  • Excellence in Clinical Research Support
    The CC will provide the optimal environment for the conduct of and training in clinical research.
  • Quality of Patient Care
    The CC will provide the best available patient care to participants in clinical research studies.
  • Cost Effectiveness/Efficiency
    The CC will manage its resources in the most economical manner to maximize support of Institute clinical research programs.
