Arranging for Anesthesia Services
- Procedures outside of the operating room, such as MRI, CT, General Radiology, Interventional Radiology, and Radiation Oncology require the following separate requests:
- Request for procedure or study (e.g. MRI, CT, line placement, etc.) via CRIS
- Request for anesthesia services via SISWEB
- Request for pre-anesthesia clinic appointment via CAS
- For outpatient procedures, request for 1NW Day Hospital admission and/or recovery
It is imperative to submit the request for anesthesia via SISWEB as soon as the off-site procedure is scheduled, in order to assess anesthesia availability. For any questions about scheduling anesthesia or SISWEB access, please contact the DPM Surgical Scheduler at 301-402-3107.
- Patients should be evaluated by an anesthesiologist prior to the day of the procedure. A pre-anesthesia clinic visit should be scheduled via CAS. The patient's guardian will receive specific instructions regarding which medications should be taken and when the patient may eat or drink prior to the procedure. Also, there will be a section called PRE-ANESTHESIA INSTRUCTIONS in the Pre-Anesthesia document that can be read by the primary team and nurses caring for the patient. This may include special NPO instructions or specific meds to be taken, devices to accompany pt, etc… If there are any issues with obtaining a pre-anesthesia clinic appointment, please contact the pre-anesthesia clinic at 301-594-3342.
- Please schedule outpatient anesthesia recovery in the 1NW Day Hospital, 301-451-7727. If a patient is likely to require inpatient recovery or critical care services, these arrangements should be made prior to the day of procedure. Issues such as obstructive sleep apnea, CPAP or home oxygen requirements, weight under 10 kg, or low motor tone suggest the possible need for a post anesthesia inpatient admission. Any questions involving post anesthesia disposition may be directed to the pre-anesthesia clinic, 301-594-3342.
- For procedures performed on an outpatient basis, it is important for the primary team to coordinate the various steps to be taken on the day of the procedure with the parents, nursing unit involved, operating room and/or off-site anesthesia location, including:
- Outpatient admission and registration via the 1NW Day Hospital or Pediatric Clinic, where the patient will receive an ID band, allergy band, emergency resuscitation drug sheet and pre-procedure checklist.
- Accompanying the patient to the procedure location, with the patient's chart and above documentation and bands.
- If a blood draw is necessary while the patient is receiving anesthesia, the primary team should be present to fill the necessary tubes and labels, and to transport to appropriate laboratory. Contact Nursing in the pediatric area where the patient is being seen if assistance with blood collection is needed.
