A series of landmark events and pivotal initiatives have marked this exciting era of revitalization for the Clinical Center.
Major strides in streamlining and refining our governance structures have been evident in the work of two new bodiesthe Clinical Center's Board of Governors and the NIH Clinical Center Advisory Council. Their voices bring together a depth of experience and expectation that is unprecedented. Together, they offer, and will continue to provide, external oversight, impartial operational management, and the strong involvement of the institutes in issues affecting their intramural clinical research programs.
As our governance structure is being crafted, construction plans for our new building are being scrutinized, refined, and finalized. At the close of FY '97, we were about to break ground on our new, $333 million Clinical Research Center. It will be named for Senator Mark O. Hatfield of Oregon, a long-time and articulate advocate for clinical research. Vice President Al Gore and Senator Hatfield will turn the first shovels of soil signaling this new era.
We continue to explore innovative ways to incorporate emerging technologies
into
the conduct of clinical research. We are devising new and more efficient
ways to share what we learn through our work here. Thousands of people from
around the world have searched the online database of clinical research
studies on the Clinical Center's web site. Broadcasts of our Grand Rounds
offer health professionals across the nation unprecedented opportunities
in continuing education, and telemedicine has opened collaborations between
investigators at the Clinical Center and remote locations world-wide.
As plans for the new building evolve to reflect the needs of clinical research into the next century, we will continue to call on those who work here, conduct science here, and seek care here for guidance and inspiration. Our employees continue to provide the best in service and support. Our patients, who are the heart of our mission, can continue to expect only the best in care.
