Purpose/Goal: Through this initiative, the Clinical Center will provide an enhanced environment for clinical research in the operative setting. This project specifically targets the provision of real-time magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) capability in the surgical suite. Through the trans-institute planning process, two institutes (and potentially additional IC’s) indicated the clear need for augmented imaging capability in the operative setting. Key stakeholders reached consensus on the type of imaging (MRI) as well as the desired specifications for the equipment.
Scope: This project provides for the renovation and provision of imaging equipment and surgical suite equipment and supplies to support 1-2 MRI equipped surgical suites.
Resources: The cost of planning and renovations to four operating rooms into two MRI suites and the purchase of one magnet. No staffing or FTE’s would be planned. Estimated costs for FY 2001: $5 million. Funding will be provided by user institutes.
Total costs for FY 2001 would be:
Renovations $3.0 million
Equipment $5.4 million
IT equipment $ .5 million
Total $8.9 million
There is a potential for cooperative agreements to defray the costs of the magnet and surgical tools. As upgraded technology become available, a second magnet would be purchased (potentially in FY 2002).
Timeline: FY 1999 Preliminary design contract
FY 2000 Determined scope of project and desired MRI equipment specifications
FY 2001 Obtain funding, final decision about magnet, renovation process, install first magnet, purchase ancillary OR equipment, meet routinely with stakeholders to determine satisfaction with process FY 2002 First intra-operative cases
Outcomes: Success will be the completion of renovations and magnet installation within FY 2001
FY 2001 Key Initiative: Intra-Operative Imaging
