“What Are Staff Telling Us?”
This year, Clinical Center management surveyed staff to gain overall impressions of the organization’s strengths and to elicit recommendations for making the CC a better place to work. A return rate of 7% (N=244) limits the interpretations that can be drawn from the survey results. However, themes were identified and provide direction for further inquiry. Co-workers, patients and the mission of the Clinical Center were identified as the strongest incentives for working at the CC.
Areas Needing Improvement
Communications
The strongest theme that emerged from the survey related to improving communications. Recommendations focused on speed and access to information from both a technology (better computers) and human perspective (for example: town meetings, e-mail updates, focus groups).
Quality of Work/Life
The second theme focused on retention issues. Employees recommended more flexible hours and tours of duty. Allowing nurses to work within their expertise areas and avoid floating was also noted. The need for an exercise area, available parking for later shifts, and improved security at night were additional recommendations.
Management
Management issues received the third most comments. Recommendations included keeping policies and procedures consistent, decreasing “micro-management” of departments, improving resource coordination by ensuring that supplies are available as needed, and increasing recycling efforts.
