Description

Family-centered housing arrangements are needed in order to enhance the research experience for research volunteers. The NIH Guest House provides a lodging site proximal to the CC for clinical research volunteers who do not need to be hospitalized but need to remain close to the CC, and to families of seriously ill patients. This service provides a convenient and less expensive alternative to other lodging options or lengthened inpatient stays.

Accomplishments-to-Date

  • NIH Guest House opened September 1996 in Building 20 as a pilot and is highly successful with near 100% occupancy
  • Six apartments leased by NIH with approval from Scientific Directors (Building 20 under renovation)
  • Occupancy continues high with all apartments having registered guests 100%
    of time
  • May 1999 costs for two additional apartments analyzed and proposal made to add two apartments to support patient populations requiring long-term stays
  • Evaluations from guests have been excellent with high degrees of satisfaction

FY2000 Goals

  • Expand the current apartment holdings to include two apartments designated for special populations requiring local housing beyond two week duration due to the requirements of their protocol, i.e., BMT, Solid Organ Transplant
  • Develop a permanent Guest House proximal to the new Clinical Research Center
  • Complete cost analysis to estimate financial impact and financial models of future lodgings to include financial donations from private sources
  • Maintain 100% occupancy and 100% patient satisfaction
