Confronting Obesity: Updates in Prevention and Treatment Research

Many people who struggle with weight loss or maintenance wonder if they have a 'low metabolic rate.' Dr. Chen will explore the myth by showing what is a metabolic rate, how it is measured, when and in whom it changes, and what one can do to preserve it. The lecture will highlight the current metabolic research program at the NIH Clinical Center.
Lawrence Appel, MD
Dr. Appel's lecture will provide information on trends in obesity and its consequences, factors related to the etiology of obesity, and evidence-based approaches to prevent and treat obesity.
Tania Heller, MD, FAAP
Dr. Heller will define the problem of adult and childhood obesity and cover the clinical complications and risk factors, including lifestyle and behavioral factors in obesity. She will conclude with a discussion of treatment and the need for early intervention on several fronts.

Bipolar disorder is a common chronic illness that affects mood, activity levels, behavior and thinking. Dr. Zarate's lecture will provide information on the diagnosis, course, prognosis, and treatment of bipolar disorder as well as new research directions.
Jennifer Lanier Payne, MD
Dr. Payne will cover the management of depression during pregnancy with a focus on how we think about treatment of depression during pregnancy and research-based options for treatment. She will also discuss ways to recognize depression and when to seek help.
David T. George, MD
Dr. George will address the indications for electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), the ECT procedure, and the side effects of ECT.
