Dr. Lauren Wood, completed
her undergraduate work at Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, where she majored
in biology. In 1984, she received her medical degree from Duke University School
of Medicine and went on to complete residency training in internal medicine
and pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine Affiliated Hospitals in Houston,
Texas.
Dr. Wood pursued further
subspecialty training at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases
and completed a fellowship in allergy and immunology in 1991. She is a diplomate
of the American Board of Pediatrics, American Board of Internal Medicine, and
American Board of Allergy and Immunology. Dr. Wood is a senior clinical investigator
in the HIV and AIDS Malignancy Branch of the National Cancer Institute and a
Commissioned Officer with the U.S. Public Health Service. She was promoted to
Senior Surgeon in 1994. She maintains an academic appointment as an Assistant
Professor of Pediatrics at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences
in Bethesda, Maryland.
Since 1994, she has served
as coordinator of the clinical research program for HIV-infected adolescents;
she also serves as a codirector of the pediatric outpatient clinic. Dr. Wood
was the recipient of a National Research Award intramural NIH grant, and, in
1996, an NCI Division of Clinical Sciences Recognition Award.
She shares her professional
expertise as a reviewer for the Journal of Pediatrics and as an Associate Editor
for Clinical and Diagnostic Laboratory Immunology. She serves on the Boards
of Directors for The Children's Inn and Love and Action, and on the Cancer Advisory
Panel for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. As a researcher, Dr. Wood
is a principal investigator on multiple studies sponsored by the National Cancer
Institute. Her research focuses on the clinical investigation of antiretroviral
and immune-based therapies in children and adolescents with HIV infection. She
publishes widely on HIV, AIDS-related cancer, and adolescent health issues related
to HIV. Dr. Wood has coauthored numerous scientific abstracts and publications.
She is a sought-after speaker, having presented at national conferences and
symposia on the treatment of HIV infection and its impact on children, adolescents,
women, and minorities.
