Director's Message

Clinical researchers at the Warren Grant Magnuson Clinical Center conduct a wide and impressive range of research activities. While NIH Clinical Center staff provide a nucleus of support and services for institute clinical investigators who carry out most of the studies, Clinical Center investigators also pursue their own unique clinical investigations.

This year, some of those research projects have been widely recognized, not only in professional journals, but also in the lay press. Clinical Center researchers were acclaimed for their work on drug interactions with herbal supplements, AIDS, and hepatitis. Harvey Alter, M.D., received the 2000 Albert Lasker Clinical Medical Research Award for his pioneering work leading to the discovery of the virus that causes hepatitis C and the development of screening methods that reduced the risk of blood transfusion-associated hepatitis in the United States from 30% in 1970 to virtually zero in 2000.

This report summarizes investigations overseen by Clinical Center investigators in FY 2000.
